A late touchdown for Mayfield led to a rare win over Chardon.

MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — Mayfield bounced back from a lopsided loss with a 28-21 victory over Chardon Friday night in a game that featured multiple lead changes and clutch plays on both sides. The Wildcats entered Friday night’s contest seeking redemption after falling 49-14 to Riverside the previous week.

Chardon had also suffered a recent conference loss to the Beavers, setting up a matchup between two teams looking to get back on track. Mayfield junior running back Ben Koret tied the game at 21 with 5:59 to go in the third quarter, setting up a dramatic finish. Senior wide receiver Danny D’Agostino provided the game-winner for Mayfield, scoring with 2:11 remaining to give the Wildcats a 28-21 victory. “This is a team we struggled with for a long time, a great program and I thought our kids came ready to play,” said Mayfield head coach Ross Bandiera. Mayfield’s Micah Linn reflected on the significance of the win: “It was a great one we haven’t beat these guys in so long. It was just great to get out there. We fought through some adversity with the field goal block and it was just a great win for our team overall and I’m so proud of everyone on the team.” Junior defensive lineman John Harris set the tone early for Mayfield, forcing a Chardon fumble with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter to give his team red zone possession. Harris then capped the drive himself, scoring on a 2-yard run with 6:33 left in the opening quarter. Chardon answered quickly with a 69-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Drayton AllGood, tying the score at 7 with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter. Chardon’s sophomore quarterback Andrew Cole put the Hilltoppers ahead 14-7 with 11:09 left in the second quarter, but Koret evened the scoring at 14 with 6:25 remaining in the half. Chardon capitalized on a Mayfield missed field goal attempt when junior linebacker Jack Weaver scored with 2:31 left in the second quarter, giving the Hilltoppers a 21-14 halftime advantage.Generative AI was used to organize information for this story.
