Alexandra Jensen, a Cape Town speech language pathologist who treats patients with Covid voice, spoke to Business Insider South Africa about all the ways Covid-19 can affect your voice. Covid-19 is known to affect the respiratory system, and a change in respiratory parameters can affect the process of phonation, contributing to the voice disorder known as Covid voice.
There is also evidence of Covid-19 resulting in an acute stress disorder. Heightened stress, anxiety or grief may also occur indirectly due to the pandemic crisis itself. Stress and anxiety can result in excessive muscle tension associated with phonation. The laryngeal structures are normal, but the increased tension will create “stiffness” of the vocal folds, and the voice will present with a strained quality and lowered pitch.
