Max Verstappen wins French GP after Charles Leclerc crashes out.

When Ferrari ace Charles Leclerc looks back on his 2022 season, he will remember the races he should have won. Ferrari's mechanical failures have been well recorded, as has the surefire win in Silverstone that went to his teammate after a split tire strategy on a restart. For the most part, Leclerc's championship-derailing misfortunes have been the fault of the team.

Leclerc started on pole with Max Verstappen in second, a familiar pairing this season. He survived an early battle with the Red Bull driver to build a small lead on the car that had on so many occasions been trounced in qualifying by Ferrari only to come alive early in the race, building a lead of a few seconds. Verstappen was first to stop, leaving Leclerc to push on older tires.

Lewis Hamilton coasted quietly to second, in between a much faster Verstappen and a contentious battle for third throughout the closing laps. That battle was effectively decided when Carlos Sainz Jr. was handed a five second time penalty, eventually leaving Sergio Perez and George Russell to fight amongst themselves for the third and final spot on the podium.
