Max Verstappen took victory at the first of two Italian Grands Prix this year, leading teammate Sergio Perez across the finish line. | Wheels24
Verstappen had a great launch off the line and soon had Perez, who started in third, behind him. Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz - who started in second and fourth, respectively - both had poor getaways. Leclerc soon fell to fourth behind the two Red Bulls and McLaren's Lando Norris, while Sainz had it all to fight for against Ricciardo, Norris' teammate.
The two drivers made contact, with Sainz coming unstuck in the gravel. Ricciardo fell to the back of the grid and eventually finished in last place.Over at Mercedes, the team's fortunes went from bad to worse. Though Russell registered a good result, Hamilton failed to make an impression on the race. He finished in 14th place and one lap behind Verstappen.
After the race, team boss Toto Wolff apologised to Hamilton for the challenging race, but the driver was not too keen on engaging in conversation. After the race, Verstappen said:"We were on it. As a team, we did everything well. I think this 1-2 is deserved" It was a tough outing for Ferrari, and can the team only hope to have a better outing when F1 returns to Monza later this year.
