Scherzer and Verlander, teammates twice with Detroit and New York, have a combined six Cy Young Awards but have never started against each other.

“Every single time you come to the ballpark, you’re trying to win a game,” Scherzer said. “You want your team to come out on top. For me, you’ve got to focus on your job, and for me, that’s holding the opposing team down.

But, at the end of the day, your offense can only provide so many runs when you’re going up against great pitchers. You know it’s going to be a tight ballgame in those type of moments.”About those great pitchers: Scherzer and Verlander have been teammates twice, first with the Detroit Tigers from 2010-15 and then with the Mets for five months. Each has won three Cy Young Awards, both have cleared 3,000 career strikeouts and won a World Series. How’s this instead: Wednesday will be the first time that the two have ever started against each other.“This’ll be fun, first time getting to face Ver,” Scherzer said Wednesday. “I’ve been lucky my whole career, I think I’ve gotten to face all the best guys in the world, get to play with all the best guys in the world. I’ve gotten to play with Ver for a while, this is going to be fun to actually go up against him.” Reports surfaced in August that the two did not get along in New York, but when the Rangers visited New York that month,Scherzer said Tuesday that he particularly enjoyed picking Verlander’s brain and “get a download of how he is as a pitcher” when the two were teammates earlier this season. Scherzer, 39, is 3-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 47 strikeouts through six starts with the Rangers. Verlander, who pitched for the Astros from 2017-22 and won two World Series titles, is 4-2 with a 4.69 ERA in six starts since returning to Houston. “I’ve got a great seat to watch some really great players play,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday. “To see matchups like this, I enjoy it.”
