The Mavericks announced on Tuesday that the front office exercised the fourth-year, $4.8 million team option on Green’s rookie contract for the 2023-24 season, positioning Green to play this season and next under team control.
Green, 21, will enter restricted free agency in the 2024 offseason, eligible for a $6.8 million qualifying offer from the Mavericks, who would otherwise receive compensation should another team sign him away.That the Mavericks didn’t wait until the end of the month is likelyfor Green’s rise in his third season since former general manager Donnie Nelson and the franchise’s past leadership selected him No. 18 overall in the 2020 draft.
After a disjointed, COVID-marred first season under former coach Rick Carlisle, Green played as part of coach Jason Kidd’s rotation for most of his second season as Kidd’s staff considered the defensive-minded guard as if he was still a rookie. While he fell out of the playoff rotation last spring, Green worked daily with noted trainer Joe Abunassar at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas over the summer toHe has run with the Mavericks’ starting unit as the shooting guard in several scrimmages during training camp with Kidd highlighting him as a potential new ball-handler to add depth and versatility in Jalen Brunson’s absence.
“This summer he did everything we asked him to do, and early here in camp, he looks great, so I’m happy we picked up the option,” Kidd said Tuesday. “Now, for him to continue to build on what he’s been doing and we’re working with him a little bit more on bringing the ball up and getting us into the offense, so we’ll see how he will digest that part of the game. But we need him to be Josh [with] his energy.
