3, 2026, in Dallas.that he wouldn’t rush the decision to hire a new general manager once he appointed Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley as the franchise’s interim leaders.who assumed control of the Mavericks in December 2023 alongside majority owner Miriam Adelson , is on the horizon of his first major hire as governor. Details on the search for a replacement have been scarce, but Mavericks CEO Rick Welts and president Ethan Casson provided more clarity during Thursday’s Mavs Ball. Welts said the team is not in a rush to hire a permanent general manager but would hope to have one in place before the NBA draft. The annual draft doesn’t have an official date, but it usually falls around late June.“We want to make the right decision,” Welts said. “We’re pretty excited about potential candidates. I think ideally we want to have somebody in place ahead of the draft.” NBA teams are usually tight-lipped about revealing candidates during comprehensive searches for new coaches and general managers, but the Mavericks have two internal candidates already manning the fort in Finley and Riccardi. Both executives were assistant general managers before they were promoted to co-interim GMs on the morning of Nov. 11. They navigated the 2026 trade deadline together and propelled the franchise forward byin exchange for Khris Middleton, Marvin Bagley III and AJ Johnson. The move offered the Mavericks financial flexibility and freedom to build around Cooper Flagg as the new franchise centerpiece. “I think I am Dallas,” Finley said. “I’m everything that Dallas is about. I played here through the good times and bad times and as a fan of the Mavericks, I know what it takes and I know what the fans are looking for. I would love to have the chance to lead this franchise into the future and to, ultimately, championship contenders.”The Mavericks have a long way to go before they can return to contender status, but the first step starts with surrounding Flagg with a running mate that aligns with his timeline. The Mavericks’ incoming lottery pick will be the first decision made by the new general manager. Riccardi referenced his collaborative efforts with Finley when asked about how he’s navigated the process of being a candidate for the full-time job. “I think it’s easy for Fin and myself,” Riccardi said. “All we care about is what’s best for the organization. We put the organization first in everything that we do. Let the rest of it take care of itself.”The Mavericks could also seek to hire externally, especially if they desire someone with previous experience as a general manager. Harrison arrived with the Mavericks after 19 seasons in various roles at Nike. Welts and Casson, who is in his first season with the Mavericks as team president, have been occupied over the first quarter of the year withThe Mavericks have roughly three months to make a franchise-altering decision, but Casson said Dumont is being intentional about the hiring process for finding a new general manager. “It’s a huge hire,” Casson said. “It’s a really important role when you think about developing culture, sustaining culture, how we manage the draft, how we manage the vision and direction of the team. It’s a lot to that position, but what I really like about our approach is we’re not rushing anything.”Mike Curtis Mike is the Mavericks Beat Writer for The Dallas Morning News.
