They enjoyed a week-long vacation on the island, spending time in Kaanapali and Lahaina, with plans to leave paradise behind on Tuesday."Monday was the best day actually," he said. "And then Monday night, the wind started kicking up. But thought, we're gonna leave tomorrow. You know, one of those things like, 'Ehh, it's not going to be the best day tomorrow. So, I don't feel so bad leaving.' I had no idea what was in store for that following Tuesday.
"We didn't really realize all that. We had no reception, we had no power," Ellis-Sutton shared. "So we didn't realize that the depth of it. So now, to really see that it's wiped out entire town is like... it's heartbreaking." A statement from her office says that she was never in danger and that "this wildfire is devastating to witness and our thoughts are with the people of Maui." Mayor Breed is in Hawaii on personal vacation.Hawaiian Airlines passengers at Mineta San Jose International Airport said they're monitoring the fire's movement.San Jose resident Shannon Drozen said her husband and kids are in Maui now, visiting her in-laws. She had plans to land there on Wednesday.
