Man United are being heavily linked with the prospect of signing Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
With the unofficial transfer deadline having now passed, expect transfer activity to ramp up in the coming weeks.
United need to cut their cloth this summer and there are a cluster of players within the squad that need shifting. However, the centre-back department has already been trimmed via the exit of Raphael Varane. The Dutchman is no stranger to United manager Erik ten Hag, previously working with him at Ajax. He was part of the side that Ten Hag led to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
One thing that was common about De Ligt's move to Juventus and then his move to Bayern was that he scooped the No.4 shirt on both occasions. He also previously wore that particular number at Ajax, meaning he has a long-running affiliation with it, similarly, for example, in the way Cristiano Ronaldo is associated with No.7.
