Matthew Boyd, who made eight regular season starts for the Guardians and three more in the playoffs, will pitch for Chicago in 2025.

Matthew Boyd, who pitched in eight regular season games for the Guardians after returning from reconstructive elbow surgery in 2024, will pitch for the Cubs next season according to MLB insider John Heyman.

Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said shortly after the postseason that the club had talked to Boyd about returning, and that the 33-year-old lefty expressed interest in coming back. Antonetti called Boyd an “elite human being,” and said the veteran brought stability to a largely inexperienced Cleveland rotation.

Boyd carried that momentum into the postseason where he allowed one run in 11 2/3 innings over in three starts and made himself an attractive rotation piece in free agency. Following Cleveland’s Game 5 loss to the Yankees in the ALCS, Boyd called the experience of playing with the Guardians and first-year manager Stephen Vogt “unique.”

Sunday saw free agent righty Frankie Montas agree to a reported two-year deal to stay with the Mets worth $34 million. Lefty Yusei Kikuchi signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Angels on Wednesday. Both Montas and Kikuchi, as well as newly-inked Dodgers lefty Blake Snell are all clients of mega-agent Scott Boras, who also represents Boyd.
