The government will scrap Public Health England and replace it with a new pandemic response body, the health secretary has announced
Setting out his plans, Hancock admitted that the country did not go ‘into this crisis with the capacity for a response to a once in a century-scale event’.
Hancock said: ‘To give ourselves the best chance of beating this virus once and for all – and of spotting and being ready to respond to other health threats, now and in the future, we are creating a brand new organisation to provide a new approach to public health protection and resilience.’ Labour criticised the move as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘risky’, with Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth saying that a structural reorganisation is ‘time consuming’ and ‘energy sapping’.Chief executive of health think tank The King’s Fund, Richard Murray, criticised the move saying ‘Public Health England appears to have been found guilty without a trial’.
