Matt Damon and his wife agreed that he would take time off from acting, and the only caveat was if Christopher Nolan called about a new opportunity.
Before being cast in Oppenheimer, Matt Damon planned to take time off from acting. Oppenheimer marks Damon's second collaboration with director Christopher Nolan, the first being the role of Dr. Mann in the Nolan movie Interstellar. In Oppenheimer, Damon plays Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, who was selected to oversee the Manhattan Project and worked closely with J. Robert Oppenheimer to make the atomic bomb a reality.
"This is going to sound made up, but it's actually true. I had — not to get too personal — negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off. I had been in Interstellar, and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn't in the rotation, but I actually negotiated in couples therapy — this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called.
