Padres score three times in eighth inning, on Jake Cronenworth's RBI single and a two-run double by Matt Carpenter
Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu was still buzzing Sunday morning — from both clubhouses to the stands — about what happened the night before in the Padres’ 16-11 victory.Carpenter’s soft double was the Padres’ fourth extra-base hit of the game, a day after they ripped a season-high 11. Their only home run — five fewer than Saturday — was Austin Nola’s two-run shot in fifth inning.
“I didn’t think there was any chance he was going to go six innings early in the game,” Melvin said. “He looked like he was struggling with his breaking ball, leadoff home run to start the game, gives up another run, gives up two in the fourth, then pitches his best in the fifth and sixth … when he was somewhat tired. And we needed that kind of performance.”
The team that scored in seven of the eight innings in which it batted Saturday, then put up two more zeroes against a pair of relievers before a one-out walk by Soto and single by Bogaerts against Tyler Rogers and two-out single by Cronenworth off Giants closer Doval tied the game.
