Former NFL running back Matt Breida announced his retirement from the league at the age of 30.

NFL running back s often have shorter careers compared to players in other positions due to the significant physical strain they endure. Turning 30 has often been seen as a marker where running back s may start to decline in performance. Matt Breida , who recently celebrated his 30th birthday, made the decision to retire from the NFL just weeks before the start of the regular season.

Breida last played for the New York Giants and began his professional football journey with the San Francisco 49ers. He returned to the 49ers in 2024, participating in some preseason practices with the team. Throughout his seven-year career, Breida also played for the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. According to ESPN, Breida chose to retire and passed on an opportunity to return to South Florida for a workout with the Dolphins. Undrafted out of Georgia Southern University in 2017, Breida secured the starting running back position with the 49ers in 2018, culminating in a career-high 814 rushing yards for the season. During his two seasons with the Giants, Breida appeared in 34 games. Breida's NFL career concludes with 2,652 total rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns
