CHATTOGRAM, Bangladesh — Veteran Angelo Mathews scored a half-century as Sri Lanka set an improbable 511-run target Tuesday for Bangladesh to win the second and final cricket test.

In reply, Bangladesh reached 31-0 at lunch on Day 4 with Mahmudul Hasan and Zakir Hasan remaining in the crease against some disciplined bowling. Resuming at 102-6, Sri Lanka declared its second innings on 157-7 with Mathews scoring 56 off 74 balls, hitting five fours.Mathews led the side in scoring in quick fashion to give the bowlers enough time to take 10 wickets as his side chases a series sweep with five sessions remaining. He received support from Prabath Jayasuriya, who was unbeaten on 28.

Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan gave Bangladesh the only breakthrough when he bowled Mathews, shortly after he raised his 41st test half-century. Sri Lanka posted 531 in its first innings before bowling out Bangladesh for 178, taking a 353-run lead. But the visitors did not enforce the follow-on.
