Mathematician's Models Predict Spain as World Cup Favorites, England with Slim 9% Chance

Dr Ari Joury uses 11 models to forecast the World Cup winner; Spain leads with 20% probability, while England has only a 9% chance. Despite low odds, he says it reflects a competitive field, not a doomed campaign.

England 's World Cup campaign begins tonight, but a mathematician's models cast doubt on their chances of lifting the trophy. Dr Ari Joury, a particle physicist and founder of AI firm Wangari, developed 11 distinct predictive models to forecast the tournament winner.

These digital tipsters collectively crowned four different champions, yet none selected England as the victor. Seven models backed Spain, two singled out Argentina as the likeliest winner, while France and the Netherlands each received support from one system. When averaged across all models, the Three Lions have just a nine percent chance of becoming champions.

However, Dr Joury cautions against interpreting this as a definitive failure. He explains that a low probability does not indicate a doomed campaign; rather, it reflects a crowded field of nearly 50 teams with six or seven genuine contenders, which splits the title chance many ways. Even an excellent side typically lands in single digits under such conditions.

According to the averaged models, Spain leads with a 20 percent win probability, followed by France and Argentina at 14 percent each, and the Netherlands at 10 percent. Notably, five distinct models gave Spain greater than a one-in-four chance of winning, with one assigning nearly one-in-three odds.

In contrast, even the model most confident in France gave them only a 12 percent chance. Dr Joury emphasizes that Spain starts marginally ahead of a very tight pack, but intense competition means the favorites are still more likely to not win than to win. He highlights the high-variance nature of tournament football, where knockout stages hinge on single moments. To balance biases inherent in any single prediction method, Dr Joury employed multiple models.

He notes that a single model provides one answer without revealing how much it depends on choices like rating systems, goal distributions, or learning algorithms. For example, in predicting a Spain vs Morocco match, Spain's win probability ranged from 69 percent down to 25 percent across models, with one system even favoring a draw. By combining models, individual errors tend to cancel out, offering a steadier overall result.

This approach provides fans with a nuanced perspective on England's chances, which-while statistically low-do not rule out the possibility of glory
