Acting head coach Rodney Terry has impressed Tennessee’s Rick Barnes — his former boss — with how he’s guided Texas through Chris Beard’s firing.AUSTIN — Rodney Terry wasn’t hunting for a pep talk. The longtime coach knew, even in the hazy hours after Texas head coach Chris Beard was arrested on a felony domestic violence charge Dec. 12, that he could step up and steady the program before it lurched into a state of disarray.
Barnes and Terry remain steadfast friends. They talk often — sometimes about hoops, sometimes about life — and pull for one another’s team from afar. But for a few hours Saturday night, they’ll be adversaries in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. “They’re Final Four good,” Terry said of the Vols. “I mean, No. 1 defense in the country. They’ve got size, they’ve got shooters, they’ve got experience. They’ve got a little bit of everything you need in terms of being elite. So to go in and compete on their home floor against that quality opponent, we’ve got to do things at an elite level ourselves. But it’d be an incredible résumé game for us if we’re able to go in and get that done.
