In a social media post, Mastriano posed the question: Will we preserve our heritage as America turns 250? The fields where Union and Confederate soldiers squared off in 1863 are not merely symbolic sites, according to Mastriano; it's a sacred ground that reminds citizens of the "terrible price" paid to preserve the nation. In recent years, downtown Gettysburg has shifted away from its historical focus, according to Mastriano. He cited pride festivals that close Lincoln Square, rainbow flags across storefronts, and a growing stream of activist messaging and said the shift has gone too far. In his post, Mastriano said visitors are treated to events centered on "radical leftist activism" rather than the Civil War legacy that made Gettysburg historic in the first place.
