Pennsylvania Sen. Doug Mastriano called Gettysburg 'one of the most powerful symbols' in the story of America.

"When Abraham Lincoln stood here and spoke of a “new birth of freedom,” he placed Gettysburg permanently at the center of the American conscience." called Gettysburg "one of the most powerful symbols" in the story of America, but said the town's "sharp left turn" has turned away from its historic focus.

In a social media post, Mastriano posed the question: Will we preserve our heritage as America turns 250? The fields where Union and Confederate soldiers squared off in 1863 are not merely symbolic sites, according to Mastriano; it's a sacred ground that reminds citizens of the "terrible price" paid to preserve the nation. When Abraham Lincoln stood here and spoke of a “new birth of freedom,” he placed Gettysburg permanently at the center of the American conscience. He highlighted how people would travel across the country and across the globe to walk through the hallowed grounds where Lincoln spoke and reflect on sacrifice, unity, and national purpose. In recent years, downtown Gettysburg has shifted away from its historical focus, according to Mastriano. He cited pride festivals that close Lincoln Square, rainbow flags across storefronts, and a growing stream of activist messaging and said the shift has gone too far. In his post, Mastriano said visitors are treated to events centered on "radical leftist activism" rather than the Civil War legacy that made Gettysburg historic in the first place. He claimed some local business owners are dismayed by the pressure they feel to take part in the events and said some have even started declining to participate in events they reportedly feel don't align with the "historic character" Gettysburg represents. In light of what he described as recent upheavals in local leadership, Gettysburg has been presented with an opportunity to reassess the direction of the town's public image. As America approaches its 250th birthday, Mastriano believes Gettysburg should stand as a beacon of the ideals that built the nation, rather than serve as a stage of "political fashions of the moment."National Weather Service expires tornado watch for south-central PA countiesLower Swatara Township police were called to a reported domestic situation Sunday evening that saw a man repeatedly beaten with a baseball bat.Community members are coming together to support a family who lost everything, including their 3-year-old daughter's birthday gifts, during a house fire. The Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center will be foreclosed upon and will not reopen, the owner confirmed to CBS 21 Monday. This comes after the center had a baMore than 14,000 power outages that have been reported in Lancaster County.Much of the outages are currently south of Lancaster city in Bausman, and Kissel Hill
