The former Texas secretary of state, a businessman with Mexican roots, says he has what it takes to make San Antonio a 'gateway' city. Will voters agree?
Rolando Pablos spent this week in Mexico City, happily splashing around in his element. Think: plenary sessions, keynote speeches, names and numbers scribbled in Moleskine notebooks, endless expressions of goodwill, gossip, and ritualistic meetings with executives and government officials over dinner. All with the aim of generating business.
Former Secretary of State Rolando Pablos joins crowded field for San Antonio mayor He attended the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, on Tuesday. At night he retired to a hotel room overlooking El Zócalo, the vast public square in the heart of Mexico City. You get the idea: Pablos, 57, is a networker who operates at the intersection of business and government. He's also running for mayor of San Antonio.
Early start for San Antonio mayoral race He announced his candidacy in late August, joining a field that included three City Council members — John Courage, Adriana Rocha Garcia and Manny Pelaez — and tech entrepreneur Beto Altamirano. 'Promoting San Antonio' Pablos is campaigning on an all-too-familiar platform — tackling crime, the city's dearth of affordable housing and its generational poverty — and he's leaning hard on his business experience.
