Former prime minister Tony Abbott and Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin have discussed how the growing presence of indigenous ceremonies and customs in Australian life may turn people off the Voice to Parliament.
Speaking to Credlin – his chief of staff when prime minister from 2013 to 2015 – Mr Abbott said he was “more than happy” to partake in welcomes to country by First Nations peoples in indigenous communities.
He said similarly to welcomes to country, he encouraged flying the Aboriginal flag on “important days in the Indigenous calendar” such as NAIDOC week.“Flying the flag of some of us, co-equally with the flag of all of us, all the time, I think is a step too far,” Mr Abbott said. The ABC is among top public institutions which have made it commonplace to refer to capital cities by their original local aboriginal word.
During the World Cup, the ABC even referred to Wellington, New Zealand by the traditional Maori name Te Whanganui-a-Tara.“Let's face it, the Sydney that we now know is vastly different from the country that was once occupied by the Gadigal clan.
