INDIANAPOLIS — A water main break caused a massive sinkhole near East 10th Street and Emerson Avenue Tuesday morning, creating a chaotic commute for drivers on the city's east side. One driver, identified as Stowers, encountered the flooding around 6:30 a.m. while traveling down 10th Street. Thinking she could navigate the shallow water in her small vehicle, Stowers attempted to drive through. However, her car plunged into the sinkhole, resulting in significant damage to the front end.
Stowers described the experience as shocking and said she had to crawl to the passenger side door to escape her vehicle. The impact severely damaged her car, crushing the front end up to the headlight. Stowers stated that Citizens Energy Group provided her with a rental car and promised to cover the repair costs for her damaged vehicle. 13News reporter Chase Houle contacted Citizens to inquire about the road repair timeline. As of 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, crews successfully repaired the water main and poured concrete to restore the roadway. Citizens indicated that lane restrictions will be lifted once the concrete dries, a process that could take several hours.
