Archaeologists unearth the largest collection of beads ever found, offering insights into the lives and roles of high-status women in Copper Age Iberia.

Archaeologists have unearthed what they believe to be the largest collection of beads ever discovered, shedding light on the social status and rituals of high-ranking women in Copper Age Iberia . The beads, dating back to around 2800-2600 B.C., were part of elaborate linen dresses adorned with ivory and amber pendants. Excavated from the Montelirio tholos burial at the Valencina mega-site near Seville, Spain, the tomb contained eight skeletons, seven of which were female.

This unusual gender representation suggests a significant role for women in this society. The researchers painstakingly cleaned and cataloged over 270,000 disc-shaped beads, weighing a total of 33 pounds. Made from scallop shells, their production required an estimated 10 artisans working for seven months. Phytoliths found embedded within the beads revealed the presence of flax, confirming their use in crafting linen garments. The sheer quantity and intricacy of the beads, along with the presence of ivory and amber pendants, point to the exceptional social standing of the women buried in the tomb. Professor Ramirez-Cruzado, a geoarchaeologist at the University of Seville, speculates that these women likely held positions of religious and political leadership, managing a prominent sanctuary that drew significant gatherings. The Montelirio tholos burial stands out as an exceptional example of social stratification in Copper Age Iberia, with its remarkable collection of grave goods. While DNA analysis is yet to be conducted, the site offers fascinating insights into the lives and roles of women in this ancient society
