Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson works a foot skills drill during day 7 of training camp in Berea.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes,” a wise person once said.
Back in 2019, the American Massage Therapy Association made the decision to hold its 2022 national convention in Cleveland. The lure of the city was seemingly an easy sell. “Discover foodie hot spots, walk along the lakefront or find out why Cleveland rocks at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” the AMTA invites its members on its website.
Little did organizers know back then of the hornet’s nest their members would be walking into. That’s because Cleveland, of course, is the new home of Deshaun Watson, the NFL quarterback who faced 24 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct during appointments with massage therapists and whose playing status remains up the air after the league appealed disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson’s decision to suspend him for six games.
“Massage therapists should never have to tolerate conduct outside the bounds of therapeutic massage therapy within a massage session,” said a statement issued by the AMTA, the largest nonprofit, professional association serving massage therapists, massage students and massage schools. “AMTA strongly believes that any client who steps over the line to inappropriate touch should face the legal consequences.
