Healey's proposal would allow Massachusetts municipalities to deploy a specific number of speeding cameras, calibrated based on the area's population size.
First-time offenders would receive a warning, but subsequent violations captured on camera would incur a $100 fine, as stipulated in the current proposal. The implementation of any such plan hinges on legislative approval, and if it clears by July 2026, the earliest deployment of speeding cameras would be in late 2026 or 2027. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll advocates for this measure, stating that automatic enforcement would alleviate the burden on police officers, who cannot be stationed everywhere. She emphasizes that this initiative is not revenue-driven but rather focused on enhancing road safety and improving neighborhood quality.This proposal is part of a broader push for traffic safety measures. Lawmakers recently approved plans for cameras to enforce state laws on other traffic violations. State Senator William Brownsberger, a long-time proponent of speeding cameras in Massachusetts, assures that the cameras will not be overly strict. He notes that minor infractions like exceeding the speed limit by one mile per hour should not result in penalties, and the system will be designed to ensure reasonable enforcement. Beyond speeding cameras, another development in Massachusetts politics involves former New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. He recently filed paperwork to raise campaign funds as a Democrat, signaling a potential bid for mayor of Boston. His candidacy, if it materializes, would mark the first challenge to Mayor Michelle Wu since she assumed office in 2021.
