Massachusetts is one of more than a dozen states and the District of Columbia who sued TikTok Tuesday, claiming the company's conduct violates state consumer protection laws and harms kids' mental health.
TikTok designed its social media platform"to be addictive and harmful to young users" and deceived the public about efforts to keep the app safe, Attorney General Andrea Campbell alleged in a new lawsuit.
"Massachusetts will not tolerate a future where companies exploit the vulnerabilities of young people for profit," Campbell said in a statement Tuesday morning.
“It is profiting off the fact that it's addicting young people to its platform,” District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in an interview. Officials say teens are frequently exploited for sexually explicit content through TikTok’s LIVE streaming feature, which has allowed the app to operate essentially as a “virtual strip club" without any age restrictions. They say the cut the company gets from the financial transactions allows it to profit from exploitation.
