Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed a sweeping abortion protections bill into law Friday, strengthening reproductive health care for those in-state as well as those traveling from places where abortion is now banned. MsReads via masslivenews

The legislation is designed to insulate providers and patients who receive abortion care here in Massachusetts — where the procedure is already enshrined into state law — from criminal prosecution and lawsuits from extraterritorial jurisdiction tied to states like Texas. If that right is violated in Massachusetts, providers and patients have the ability to countersue.

The crux of conference committee discussions largely revolved around how both the House of Representatives and Senate wanted to incorporate language on abortions later in pregnancy, in an effort to clarify the intent of the ROE Act. Ultimately, lawmakers agreed on a compromise that permits providers to perform abortions later in pregnancy, beyond 24 weeks, when one of four criteria is reached.
