The Maryland judge who was shot to death in his driveway last Thursday heard testimony from the wife and daughter of his suspected killer during a divorce hearing hours earlier. Judge Andrew Wilkinson called the testimony “shocking” before ruling against Pedro Argote, whose wife was granted a divorce and full custody of their four children.

A man walks past the Washington County Circuit Court building in downtown Hagerstown, Md., Friday, Oct. 20, 2023. Authorities say Maryland Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson was shot to death in the driveway of his home on Thursday night, had presided over the divorce case of the man now identified as a suspect in the killing. Washington County Circuit Court Clerk Kevin Tucker, right, swears in Andrew F. Wilkinson as a circuit court judge on Jan.

Wilkinson concluded that Argote wasn’t fit to have custody of his four younger children, ages 12, 11, 5 and 3. Argote’s wife requested a protective order soon thereafter, saying Argote was carrying a gun and surveilling her. But they later settled on a “nesting arrangement” where he would live on the first floor of their house and she would live upstairs.

In an Oct. 11 email sent to his wife’s attorney, Argote said he had purchased her an SUV and left it outside her house. But the attorney told him to remove it and instead make available their shared vehicle.
