A bill calling for the authorization and implementation of online casino gaming (iGaming) in Maryland is scheduled for its first reading in the Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday. The bill, if passed, aims to have iGaming operational by 2027, with a potential voter referendum in 2026. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission would issue licenses to qualified applicants for online gaming operations.
The bill also proposes multi-jurisdictional agreements with other states where iGaming is legal and establishes the Video Lottery Facility Employee Displacement Fund. Revenue from online casinos would be directed to the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, an educational fund. Meanwhile, the bill faces opposition from brick-and-mortar casino groups due to concerns about revenue loss and job displacement. Lawmakers also express worries about problem gambling
