Mary-Louise McLaws, who was an epidemiologist at UNSW Sydney for more than 35 years and shared crucial information during the pandemic, has died after a long illness, her family has announced
abc.net.au/news/mary-louise-mclaws-renowned-epidemiologist-dies/102724932In the darkest days of the pandemic — when people didn't know whether to wash the canned goods they'd brought home from the supermarket or buy a gas mask so they could safely exercise for one hour a day — the epidemiologist and infection control expert, Professor Mary-Louise McLaws, became the most trusted, compassionate and calming voice of reason in the lives of many Australians.
What many never knew, was that before Professor McLaws became a pandemic household name, she was already a revered international figure in the world of disease control and infection prevention, who had worked with Beijing to prevent SARS becoming a global pandemic; who had become a major figure in the World Health Organization and was responsible for identifying and solving the problem of hospital-led infections; had trained dozens of public health students and supervised countless PhD...
Her interest in infection control was prodigious. In 1984, She developed the first surveillance system for health care associated infections as a pilot for NSW Health. Her early research and public health work almost seem now as if she had been preparing her whole professional life for the arrival of COVID. As an honorary adviser to the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission, she collaborated on state-wide patient safety interventions, improving hand hygiene of healthcare workers, reducing central line-associated bloodstream infections and detecting and treating sepsis early in patients presenting to emergency departments.
The arrival on our shores of COVID-19 was Professor McLaw's moment to shine: all her many years of research and evidence-based public policy work seemed to coalesce into the public-facing role she stepped into.
