Marvel Studios Overhauls Strategy: TV Series Transformed Into Films Amid Industry Shift
Marvel Studios, Disney+, X-Men '97

Marvel Studios is restructuring its approach, shifting stalled live-action TV projects into theatrical films as part of a broader strategic overhaul prioritizing quality over quantity. Key series like *X-Men '97* and *Moon Knight* may be reformatted, signaling a major change in the studio's storytelling priorities.

Marvel Studios has undergone significant transformations over the past several years, reshaping its strategy both behind the scenes and in its future planning. After Disney CEO Bob Iger stepped down in February 2020, leadership passed to Bob Chapek, who accelerated the production of movies and TV series at an unprecedented rate.

While this expansion led to some of the studio's most controversial projects and its first theatrical films to underperform at the box office, it also stretched Marvel's creative teams too thin across multiple productions. Iger's return to the CEO role in November 2022 marked a shift in Marvel Studios' approach, prioritizing quality over quantity in its release slate. This strategic overhaul now extends to the studio's television division, where two long-delayed projects may be undergoing a complete reformatting.

Among the affected projects are *X-Men '97* and *Moon Knight*, both initially conceived as limited series for Disney+. *X-Men '97*, set in the beloved 1990s animated universe, is currently deep into production on its third season, expected to premiere in March 2027. Beyond these, Marvel Studios has not publicly announced any additional live-action Disney+ series, signaling a potential dramatic restructuring of its live-action TV lineup.

For instance, despite renewing the critically acclaimed *Daredevil: Born Again* for a second season in March 2026-and even completing a premiere script-the studio abruptly reversed course months later, leaving the show's future uncertain. Meanwhile, *Spider-Man: Freshman Year* has already been renewed for a fourth season, with producer Larry Houston expressing hopes that the revival will rival-or even surpass-the original 1990s series in longevity. This shift toward streamlined storytelling reflects a broader industry trend, as Marvel Studios redefines its approach.

By converting stalled projects like *X-Men '97* and *Moon Knight* into feature films, the studio can leverage existing casts and lore into high-stakes theatrical events, aligning with its current priorities. Meanwhile, animated productions continue to absorb the smaller-scale storytelling that once defined Marvel's live-action output. Whether these changes will revitalize audiences or leave fans longing for the heydey of serialized Marvel storytelling remains to be seen
