Yahya Abdul-Mateen II looking shocked as Simon Williams in Wonder Man
In a new interview with The Ringer, Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest dropped new details on the long development process of the latest MCU TV show, and how it initially was close to not getting released at all.
He stated, "Even when we tested the first two episodes, which we did in front of an audience, and it didn’t test all that great because a lot of people were confused by the show." Guest continued, "I was like, 'Okay, now they’re going to say, 'Let’s change it.'' And they said, 'No, we have to market this differently.'" However, as the lay-up changed, he praised the higher-ups, "So what’s amazing to me about this is the enthusiasm is one thing, but the realities of the period in which you were making the show were another." The Wonder Man TV show boss elaborated on how "we, by the grace of somebody, story gods, we survived by the skin of our teeth several moments where we almost didn’t survive, I can tell you," As the series "were one of the last projects in the door of the previous iteration of the Marvel Disney Plus experiment, where they were saying yes to many things," Guest felt that this could go in any direction, "And I think we can be anything." As Marvel Television got restructured, Guest added how "there was a period during our writing where many things at Marvel were looked at sort of through a new critical lens of what we can pare down." He confirmed that "we were definitely one of those things that was taken off their board for a moment there, and the producers who were part of our project fought like hell to convince people this is something worth continuing with." Following its launch on Disney+, Wonder Man became a critical success for Marvel Studios, as it is currently the 4th most well-received series in the MCU timeline on Rotten Tomatoes from The Multiverse Saga. It's also only 1% behind Guest's other Marvel series, Hawkeye. Produced as a series for the Marvel Spotlight banner, Wonder Man was heavily praised for not only adding new elements to the MCU but also not relying too much on the larger MCU franchise. This is crucial, as past Marvel Studios shows and movies have been criticized for sometimes feeling like homework. At the time of this story's publication, Wonder Man season 2 has not been greenlit, as Marvel Studios is currently focusing on finishing Phase 6 with its remaining projects, including the next two Avengers movies.
