Marvel Comics' Doctor Doom and MCU's Iron Man.

As Marvel fans prepare for Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom to appear on the big screen, the publisher has massive plans in store for the supervillain – and in fact, the upcoming One World Under Doom crossover event provides a perfect road map the MCU can follow to make Doom its next Thanos-level enemy.

One World Under Doom #1 – written by Ryan North, with art by R.B. Silva – will lead into the major Doom-centric event, and Marvel readers have already pointed out what a potent story this could make if it were adapted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After becoming Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom declares himself the Emperor, coercing the world's leaders to go along with him. This results in the Avengers leading the resistance against the new ruler, but when other heroes begin to question why they're fighting, Doctor Doom's control may end up being permanent. Doctor Doom's World Takeover In Marvel Comics Is A Natural Endpoint For The Villain's MCU Arc One World Under Doom #1 – Written By Ryan North; Art By R.B. Silva; Available February 12, 2025 From Marvel Comics Doctor Doom is a character who has always wanted world domination. He currently rules his own kingdom of Latveria, but that's never been enough for him. Doom will never settle for anything other than complete control of everything. He's attempted this a few times, most notably way back in Secret Wars, where Doctor Doom became God-Emperor Doom, the last god in the Marvel Universe. Thankfully, Reed Richards and the rest were able to wrest power away from Doom and restore the Multiverse, but his desire for world domination is still as strong as ever. Related Doctor Doom Is Marvel's Best Villain And That's What Makes Him So Tragic Marvel Writer Ryan North unveils what actually makes Doctor Doom Marvel’s greatest villain, & it is also tragically why he can never truly be a hero. Posts The most concerning thing about Doctor Doom is the fact that life under his rule is usually a utopia. It has been stated by several sources, including the Wakanda Panther God, that Doctor Doom's rule over the world means total world peace and a significant increase in quality of life. It's one of the many reasons why he's so hellbent on taking over the world, because he truly believes that he is justified in doing so. It's extremely likely that this nuanced and complex motivation is going to be fully explored by Robert Downey Jr in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Doctor Doom Has To Win In A Different Way From Thanos In Order To Be A Memorable MCU Antagonist Thanos Destroyed Half The World. Doom Will Rule All Of It Close The last major villain for the Avengers was Thanos. It was one of the first losses that the team suffered in the MCU, when he succeeded in wiping out fifty percent of the universe. It was a pivotal moment in the team's history and if Doctor Doom is going to be the MCU's next big villain, then he has to win differently to establish him as an even bigger threat. Thanos wasn't interested in ruling. He thought what he was doing was justified and righteous, which is very similar to Doom, but Doom will approach it differently. Doctor Doom will likely take over the entire planet in Avengers: Doomsday...Having the Avengers on the run in an oppressive world that wants them gone would be a major change. While Thanos succeeding in his genocidal plans was a major loss for the Avengers, Thanos left the planet after. Life on Earth was able to continue. If Robert Downey Jr's portrayal takes inspiration from Secret Wars and The Rise Of Emperor Doom, then he won't just show up, cause chaos, and then leave as Thanos did. Doctor Doom will likely take over the entire planet in Avengers: Doomsday, which will put the Avengers in a position they've never been in before. Having the Avengers on the run in an oppressive world that wants them gone would be a major change. Many Marvel Fans Already Believe Doctor Doom Will Be An Even Bigger Threat Than Thanos Taking The MCU To The Next Level One major aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's success with Thanos as the Big Bad in the first major epoch of its film continuity was that it made the villain a household name; previously, he had been a legendary comic book antagonist, but had little name recognition outside of comic fan circles. Doctor Doom already has that level of recognition in popular culture – meaning he already has an advantage, in terms of becoming an even more dangerous and iconic movie villain than the Mad Titan. Doom's goal in the comics has always been control, which is seen in both Secret Wars and the upcoming One World Under Doom. This would also give Doctor Doom a victory that would be completely unlike Thanos. While Thanos would have technically caused more long-term damage due to reviving half of the population for several years, Doctor Doom taking over the world is a much darker victory. It's also a much more personal one, as the Avengers would have to fight against a system created by a villain that rules over the world, as opposed to fighting against one single villain to undo something that they had done. The Avengers are Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and they've lost very few fights in the MCU. While Thanos certainly took them by surprise, no villain will ever be able to beat them like that again. That's why it's so important for Doctor Doom's victory to be different. Doom's goal in the comics has always been control, which is seen in both Secret Wars and the upcoming One World Under Doom. Hopefully, Marvel plays into this and makes the victory of their next big villain one of their darkest, as Doctor Doom takes over the world in both the comics and live-action.
