Long before becoming the X-Men's deadliest member, Kate Pryde gave Hulk one of his worst beatings, making it clear that she was a force to be reckoned with. 2007's World War Hulk: X-Men #2 saw the return of the Hulk from his exile into space at the hands of the Illuminati, with Kate being one of the X-Men on the scene to protect Professor X from the Hulk's wrath.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT World War Hulk: X-Men #2 – written by Chris Gage, with art by Andrea Di Vitto – featured Kate in a pivotal combat role during Hulk's attack on the X-Men, with her being the one to, at least temporarily, force Hulk to retreat, saving the lives of Professor X, Cyclops, and perhaps the rest of the team. Shadowkat Used Her Phase Powers To Immobilize Hulk Professor Xavier wasn't present when the Illuminati voted to exile Hulk.. When Hulk returned in World War Hulk, he arrived at the Xavier Institute anxious to interrogate Charles on what his decision would have been. Against Xavier's insistence, the X-Men fought off the Hulk, in hopes of protecting their leader. For most of the members, the onslaught of the enraged Hulk was too great to handle. Kate who was capable of slowing him down, which she accomplished by phasing his hands into the ground. Though Hulk was able to pull himself free, with shards of stone in his hands, Kate Pryde felt as though she had just "crippled" the former hero, leaving permanent damage. The Incredible Feats of Kate Pryde In many ways, this moment from World War Hulk: X-Men #2 can be viewed as a prelude to what audiences are seeing now during the Fall of X arc. Following the brutal "Mutant Massacre" perpetrated by Orchis, Kate Pryde returned to a classic alias, Shadowkat, and swore off Krakoa's peaceful ways. This new Shadowkat persona is a callback to her training by the demon ninja Ogun in the 80s, in a storyline where she took the name Shadowcat. The greater significance of Kate returning to her ninja teachings is that it is a reflection of how dire the X-Men's current situation is. Kate has gone through several identities over the course of her time with the X-Men – Sprite, Ariel, Captain Kate Pryde, Kitty – but during Fall of X the mutant race needs a violent Shadowkat, as seen in X-Men #25. Earlier moments, like in World War Hulk: X-Men #2, hinted at how violent Kate can be. What she did to the Hulk was an act of desperation. Now, she's exploring exactly how dangerous she can be, as the mutant race as a whole is in a moment of desperation. Her enemies should know that she has previously defeated the Hulk, one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.
