Mojo, facing the extinction of television, creates a reality show starring an unlikely team of heroes: Kraven, Rhino, Bishop, and Wonder Man, recruited by Hellcat. The team, dubbed Longshots, aims to be a multiversal anthology, mirroring the Defenders' unconventional structure. The article highlights the unexpected nature of this team-up, drawing comparisons to other bizarre Marvel teams and villain groups.
Marvel's most random Avengers team brings together characters no one ever expected to see cooperating. The Avengers have a pretty low bar for entry, which has granted membership to hundreds of characters throughout the years.
The X-Men are no different, with countless factions and squads turning virtually all of mankind into affiliated mutant heroes. The Age of Revelation has unleashed a chain of events that affect all major Marvel characters, mutant or not. Even Mojo now feels the side effects of the event. Since the 3K gene bomb and the X-Virus led to the extinction of television networks, Mojo is scrambling to find a way to support his business. X years later in the Marvel timeline, Marvel's status quo has changed so much that both Avengers and X-Men heroes readily accept Mojo's invitation to compete in his new twisted reality show. Mojo Assembles The Most Random Superhero Team In The Marvel Universe Longshots #1; Written by Gerry Duggan & Jonathan Hickman; Art by Alan Robinson & Yen Nitro To ensure high ratings right off the bat, Mojo hires Hellcat to recruit his cast. Hellcat, now the best bounty hunter after killing Carnage, recruits four characters: a bald Kraven who dedicates his life to hunting Land Sharks, a Rhino who lost his horn and his will to live, a Bishop who wields the Winter Soldier's arm, and a Wonder Man who has seemingly outlived the Avengers. As if that weren't enough, this cast was hand-picked by Mojo's consultant team, a squad of child X-Men. Mojo's Longshots evokes the formula of Marvel's greatest"non-team," the Defenders, known for their lack of formal structure. While Hulk, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, and Namor are its most recurring members, the original Defenders have an almost random and permanently rotating membership. If Mojo's experiment works, then the Longshots could become a multiversal version of an anthology TV show's rotating cast. Mojo's Longshots Has Several Contenders For Wildest Marvel Team Marvel Has Featured Some Weird Team-Ups Throughout The Years Mojo's Longshots might have an exceptionally unexpected line-up, but it isn't the only Marvel team with questionable member choices. For example, the Great Lakes Avengers include the 2D hero Flatman and the living portal Doorman. Other teams are extremely unbalanced, such as the Daydreamers, which have Man-Thing and Howard the Duck in their ranks; as well as the original Champions, which bring together Hercules and Ghost Rider with Black Widow and Angel. Other team-ups have been more fleeting but not any less weird. In 1977's Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2, Ghost Rider and the Thing join forces to journey through time and ensure the birth of Jesus Christ happens seamlessly. In 2020's Iron Man , Tony Stark assembles the short-lived Space Friends, which include Scarlet Spider, Frog-Man, Human Torch, and none other than Longshots leader Hellcat. Villain teams are probably even more erratic. For instance, most iterations of the Lethal Legion are hilariously unbalanced, having Ultron team up with Swordsman, and Namor's archnemesis Attuma team up with the phone-wielding Phone Ranger. The Sinister Sixteen also had Kingpin be massively overshadowed by Magneto and Loki. Perhaps in the future Mojo's Longshots will look really different.
