Vibranium's MCU origins were almost very different, but Marvel Studios' retcon early on in the MCU was perfect for the future of the coveted resource.

Vibranium was originally supposed to be introduced during Iron Man 2, but its origins were changed for future MCU projects, helping to secure a brighter future for the coveted resource.

While the element was never named in the live-action MCU, the novelization saw Nick Fury and Dr. Erik Selvig discussing potentially naming it "badassium," a fitting tribute to Tony Stark. If Stark's element had been named vibranium in the MCU, this would have drastically changed the landscape of the cinematic universe and would have cemented Stark as potentially the most intelligent and innovative man on Earth.

Retconning vibranium's MCU origins in Captain America: The First Avenger was the best decision for Marvel Studios. Tony Stark was still intelligent enough to create his own element, which allowed his arc reactor to function properly, but it also allowed Steve Rogers to become a more substantial hero: he didn't have just any old shield, but one made of invaluable vibranium.
