Warning: Contains spoilers for "The Best Part of Him" from Extreme Venomverse #1!Marvel has confirmed that Spider-Man is actually Venom’s version of Uncle Ben. Comic fans know that Uncle Ben was a defining figure in Peter Parker’s life, and that Ben's death was the prime motivator for Spider-Man’s superhero career. Yet in Extreme Venomverse #1, it is revealed that Spider-Man himself played a similar role in the life of the Venom symbiote.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The story, titled “The Best Part of Him,” is written by Ryan North, drawn by Paulo Siqueira, inked by JP Mayer, colored by Federico Blee and lettered by Joe Sabino. It opens shortly after the scene in 1985's Web of Spider-Man #1 when Peter rids himself of the symbiote in a church tower; hurt by Peter’s actions, the symbiote locates Eddie Brock, who has similarly been hurt by Spider-Man.
Peter Parker Was A Key Figure to the Symbiote Uncle Ben is an integral part of the Spider-Man mythos. Along with his wife May, Ben raised Peter after his parents were killed. Often depicted as a jovial and wise man, Ben was killed by a burglar–the same criminal Spider-Man had a chance to stop earlier in the evening; Spider-Man learning he could have saved his uncle is one of the most powerful moments in comic history.
This revelation also, as stated earlier, gives a new layer to Venom’s career as well. Even since his first appearance, Venom has had a code that prohibits him from needlessly taking human life; the symbiote learned the concepts of mercy and responsibility from Spider-Man, much the way Peter learned about them from Uncle Ben. Over time, the symbiote has come to terms with its guilt, which may explain Venom’s shift towards the side of good in recent years.
