Shadow Lines, a memorial installed at Martyr's Park, commemorates the victims of race-based violence in Dallas between 1853 and 1920.called Martyr’s Park. The site bears the blood of three men, deaths that have shaped the city deeply, though they aren’t spoken about as much.
Patrick Jennings, the Rev. Samuel Smith and Cato Miller, three enslaved Black men, were lynched here in 1860 on the false accusations that they attempted to start a slave revolt. Acalled “Shadow Lines” has at last been installed at Martyr’s Park. It’s been a long time coming, but the memorial is a poignant reflection on the city’s dark past.
The installation was also informed by how light and darkness were weaponized in the sundown towns of the American South where Black people weren’t allowed outside after dark.Engraved on one of the panels is a poem titled “Here” written by Tim Seibles, former poet laureate of Virginia who is a graduate of Southern Methodist University. The words are unflinching, capturing vivid scenes of mobs who watched the lynchings with picnic baskets.
The city’s Park and Recreation Department is adding lighting, sidewalks and historic plaques to the site, and Gray expects the memorial to be ready for commemoration in February, in time for Black History Month. The city has transformed around this land — the Trinity River that used to flow here has been replaced by cars speeding through an underpass — but the site has stayed the same, lost to time. As the city marches on through darkness and light, Shadow Lines will ensure the horrors and victims of this land are not forgotten..
