The producer was Martin Scorsese and the film was Gangs of New York. For his next film as a director though, Lonergan was on the precipice of something similarly epic in length, but not in scale.

"I suggested bringing Marty in as a respected third party who could work with me to create a final version of the film that everyone could be happy with," Lonergan told The Guardian.
