A new law comes into force on 10 June, and families could face hefty fines if they don’t get their cats microchipped

Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert has issued a warning to families with pets over a law change coming next month. And if you don’t comply with the new rules, you could receive a £500 fine.

What is the new law? The new law means that all cats in England must be chipped and registered. This is to help reduce the number of lost cats and strays. It usually costs between £10 and £30.The chip contains a serial number and can be scanned if a pet is lost to help reunite them with their owner.

‘Once the law comes in, you’ll have 21 days to sort if found to have an un-chipped cat or face a fine of up to £500,’ said MSE. ‘But it can also affect your ability to make a claim for loss or theft on your pet insurance.’According to chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss, ‘Microchipping is by far the most effective and quickest way of identifying lost pets.’
