The financial guru gave Chancellor Jeremy Hunt one last nudge before the Spring Budget on Wednesday to consider increasing the £50,000 High Income Child Benefit Charge - and it worked.
Martin Lewis, the money-saving expert, has urged older women who claimed Child Benefit to check if they are eligible for £5,000 State Pension back pay. In his latest MoneySavingExpert newsletter, he shared important information about Child Benefit.
It turns out that around 210,000 elderly people, mostly women, are owed shares of underpayments adding up to £1.3 billion. This averages out to roughly £5,000 each. He then said, "Yet this 'Home Responsibilities Protection' wasn't implemented properly for 100,000s of people between 1978 and 2010, when it was then replaced by National Insurance Credits."
Right now, DWP and HMRC are working hand-in-hand to locate those affected by this administrative error and sort out their files so theyre getting the correct amount of State Pension.
