In 1847, over 100 citizens of Marshall, Michigan, risked their safety and livelihoods to help a slave family escape to Canada, defying bounty hunters and standing up for abolition.

More than 100 citizens of Marshall, Michigan, bravely intervened to help Adam Crosswhite, his wife Sarah, and their children escape slavery and reach Canada. This dramatic event unfolded in 1847, three years after the Crosswhite family had fled a Kentucky plantation upon learning one of their four children was about to be sold. Their perilous journey northwards saw them utilizing the Underground Railroad, traversing through Indiana and Illinois before finally finding refuge in Michigan.

However, their haven proved short-lived. At 4 a.m. one morning, bounty hunters forcibly entered their home, intending to return them to Kentucky. Before this could happen, a throng of townspeople intervened, defying the bounty hunters' attempts. When the bounty hunters proposed taking only the children, the couple refused to be separated, insisting on their unity. The situation escalated when the sheriff's office arrived, arresting the bounty hunters for trespassing. This decisive action allowed the Crosswhite family to escape to Canada, securing their freedom. The citizens of Marshall stood united against the injustice of slavery. They raised funds to cover the legal costs incurred by those who had assisted the Crosswhites and adopted a resolution declaring their unwavering commitment to the freedom of enslaved people. The resolution proclaimed that the enslaved were their brothers and sisters, and their pain was their pain. They vowed to aid and assist them in their pursuit of liberty. An abolitionist journal of the time, The Signal of Liberty, condemned the use of violence and intimidation by bounty hunters, urging slaveholders to seek legal recourse rather than resorting to such methods
