Philadelphia Eagles rookie receiver Devon Allen is one-thousandth of a second under allowable reaction time

If track and field, so desperately trying to gain a slipping foothold in the U.S. and global sport landscape, wanted to drive one of its brightest stars to the NFL, it might have succeeded Sunday night at the World Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field.

After being allowed to view the computer readout of reaction times on the infield, Allen was twice shown a red card and told to exit the track. Already, Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment had withdrawn from the final after posting the fastest semifinal time but clipping a hurdle during warmups and tweaking his hamstring.

Between the hurdles and 100 final came another U.S. sweep, a back-and-forth battle in the shot put between world record holder Ryan Crouser and defending world champion Joe Kovacs. , and Katie Nageotte and Sandi Morris went 1-2 in the pole vault. That gave Team USA 14 medals, 11 more than anyone else, and six golds.

Video replays didn’t show an obvious jump, but meet officials potentially faced international uproar if they let the American stay in the race. An hour earlier, two Caribbean sprinters in the women’s 100 semis were DQ’d for similarly close false starts.
