Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush scores again for Eintracht Frankfurt and sparks speculation about a move to Manchester City.
Omar Marmoush , reportedly a target for Manchester City, increased his transfer value with another goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in their 1-0 victory on Saturday against St. Pauli in the Bundesliga . The Egyptian forward scored his 14th league goal in the 32nd minute, took a touch and another to send the ball into the far post from a difficult angle.
Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche acknowledged before the game that a club “has expressed interest” in the player, though he didn't confirm it was City. The English champions have been struggling lately under Pep Guardiola's leadership. Sky reported that Frankfurt was demanding a fee of 80 million euros (82 million dollars) for Marmoush, but Krösche also refused to confirm that. “It doesn't make sense to talk about prices,” Krösche said. “Basically, we have said that our aim is to keep this team together. Of course, we also said that if there are exceptional circumstances, we would have to think about letting go of the best players. We are not there yet”. It would be the second big transfer for Frankfurt a year and a half after they sold Randal Kolo Muani in 2023 to Paris Saint-Germain for 95 million euros (then 103 million dollars). Marmoush, who joined Frankfurt from Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg in a free transfer in 2023, is contracted to the club until the summer of 2027. Marmoush has scored 19 goals in 25 matches in all competitions for Frankfurt this season. Meanwhile, Steffen Baumgart had a difficult debut as coach of Union Berlin as his team conceded early and lost defender Tom Rothe to a red card in their 2-0 defeat at Heidenheim. Heidenheim had lost their last seven Bundesliga games. Baumgart, who previously played for Union, was appointed coach on December 30, replacing Bo Svensson, who was sacked after nine winless games in all competitions. Now they are 10. Jonathan Burkardt scored twice for Mainz to win 2-0 at home against Bochum. Burkardt is a reported target for Frankfurt if Marmoush leaves the club. Freiburg held on to win 3-2 at home against visiting Holstein Kiel. Bayern Munich faces off later against Borussia Mönchengladbach, under pressure after Bayer Leverkusen reduced their lead in the Bundesliga to one point the previous night.
