The Miami Marlins are hiring influential Astros executive Oz Ocampo as an assistant general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said on Thursday.
Ocampo had two separate stints with the Astros, most recently as a cross-checker in their international scouting department. Ocampo led Houston’s international scouting department from 2012-17 before spending two seasons as a special assistant to general manager Jeff Luhnow. He departed after the 2019 season for a job with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but returned to the Astros prior to this season.
Ocampo’s tenure as Houston’s international scouting director yielded much of the club’s current starting rotation. Framber Valdez, José Urquidy, Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier — all of whom are expected to make Houston’s World Series roster — were signed during Ocampo’s tenure. The San Francisco Giants hired longtime Astros executive Pete Putila as their general managerThe defections arrive during a period of uncertainty for Houston’s front office.
