Marles coy but hopes to have 'potent capability' of missiles 'within couple of years'

The government will announce a multibillion-dollar package to purchase and manufacture missiles in a 'radical change' to protect Australia in potential future conflicts, but there are delay concerns.

Stefanovic questioned if the Defence Minister believed long-range strike weapons could be operational"in a couple of years" amid strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. "I would have thought if this is a whole of government and whole of nation challenge, as Sir Angus Houston and Stephen Smith said, then there's not a moment to lose and we need to move faster," he stressed.

He also took a swipe at the government and called for more defence funding amid the slashing of a number of infantry fighting vehicles to help fund the new priorities.
