The 24-year-old unseeded Czech player was ranked No 42 in the world at the beginning of the tournament
Quite apart from the player on the other side of the net, Jabeur would also have to conquer her own internal demons. Her two previous grand slam finals were dominated by nerves: against Elena Rybakina she had taken the lead but appeared gripped by the enormity of what she was trying to achieve. Iga Swiatek never really gave her a sniff, but Jabeur did not help herself in the US Open final when she hit 38 unforced errors.
That match had deteriorated in the second set but this time around Jabeur seemed to lose her nerve even earlier. After splitting the first eight games – albeit with four breaks of serve – Jabeur threw in a painfully sloppy service game, including three unforced backhand errors, after which Vondrousova served out the first set to love.
Jabeur left the court in an attempt to compose herself, and while she was broken in the first game of the second set, it briefly seemed to work as she immediately bounced back to a 3-1 lead, but it was as close as she would get to a comeback. Vondrousova lost just one more game as errors, of which Jabeur made 31 across the two sets, once again haunted the Tunisian. There were nerves on her end too; she failed to convert her first match point after throwing in her fourth double-fault of the match.
But it was not enough to offer Jabeur a miraculous comeback as Vondrousova sealed the win at the net, and collapsed onto the court in celebration.
