The hero of Mark Millar's new comic King of Spies may look like Pierce Brosnan, but he's channeling Raoul Silva, not James Bond. Realizing he's been used as a pawn by those in power, an aging spy embarks on a mission of vengeance.

While its protagonist may look noticeably like former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, Mark Millar’s King of Spies flips that franchise's formula on its head by making its hero a lethally disaffected former agent far more in the mold of Skyfall's Raoul Silva. King of Spies by Mark Millar and Matteo Scalera follows Roland King, a retired MI6 agent living out his retirement in London.

Skyfall’s Raoul Silva is motivated in his quest against MI6 by what he feels to be a personal betrayal by Judi Dench’s M. After Silva’s unauthorized hacking of the Chinese government during Hong Kong’s transition of sovereignty put MI6 in a spot of diplomatic difficulty, M allows the Chinese to capture her rogue agent in exchange for six other British prisoners.

But King's differences from Silva are as fascinating as his similarities. While Silva's actions are epic in scope, his grudge against M is deeply personal. In contrast, King's wider focus makes him even more dangerous. Given his limited time on Earth, King has set his sights on taking down as many of the planet's corrupt “presidents and kings” as possible. The narrative also has little interest in treating King as misguided.

Mark Millar’s King of Spies is shaping up to be an action-packed romp through the contemporary world of espionage through the eyes of a hardened spy. Far from a dedicated retiree coming back for “one last job for queen and country,” Roland King has realized that the system he has upheld hasn’t just betrayed him, it has betrayed everyone. While he may be styled after James Bond, Roland’s trajectory in King of Spies is placing him squarely in the role of Raoul Silva to someone else’s 007. .
