The bowling alley was added to the house at 10111 Iron Gate Rd., Potomac, Md., as part of a 2006 renovation that also added a home movie theater. The listing for this house in Potomac, Md., describes it as “Frank Lloyd Wright meets Star Wars.
” But when it was built in 1991 by Mark Lerner, now the managing principal owner of the Washington Nationals, it wasn’t quite as surprising. For instance, it didn’t have a bowling alley or a movie theater with a faux ticket booth.Lerner worked with D.C. architect Jerry Harpole to design most of the core main level, including atriums with skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. He sold the house in 2005, a year before his father, Ted Lerner, bought the Nationals. Ted ceded principal ownership of the baseball team to his son in 2018. In 2006, the Potomac property, at 10111 Iron Gate Rd., was renovated, with Harpole as architect again, to include some of the unusual details on the current listing. The tennis court was replaced with an infinity pool, and a space beneath the main level was dug to make room for the orange-ombre-walled bowling alley and the Deco-inspired movie theater. The owners also added a second main-level wing with a new primary bedroom suite.Greg Prince, a pathology researcher, biotech company CEO and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints historian, bought the house in 2021 with his wife, JaLynn Prince, a photographer. She was the first to note its particular architectural appeal, he said. “The center of the house, the kitchen, the living room, family room, entry reminds you of Frank Lloyd Wright’s style,” he said. “And then you go to the two ends of , with those circular windows and roof, and you think, ‘Whoa, this is not Frank Lloyd Wright,’ but it all works.”The column explores the most interesting properties for sale in the D.C. area. They thought that an apartment over the garage could be ideal for him and a caregiver and that he would enjoy the movie theater and bowling alley. But his needs changed, and the family never moved in.“The commercial kitchen clearly had that in mind,” he said. “You could easily accommodate over 100 people in the public areas and not have it feel crowded.” The house — shaped something like a fantasy spaceship, with curved wings protruding from a central foundation — is more than 14,000 square feet, with four patios off the main level. The primary bedroom suite includes a curved bathroom and two walk-in closets that are each roughly the size of the living room. The kitchen has Sub-Zero and Gaggenau appliances. The main level also has a safe room. The lower level has spaces labeled on the floor plan as “card room,” “billiard room” and “exercise room” — in addition to the bowling alley, the theater and projector room, and an industrial-grade freezer. Media specialists advised him that a special projector was needed to accommodate the distance to the screen — “double what it usually is in a home theater,” he said. In all, the house has seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms , six garage spaces and 12 uncovered parking spots.: The house was custom built in 1991 and renovated in 2006 to include a lower level with game rooms and a theater. There is an apartment above the garage. There are 18 parking spots, including six garage spaces.
