Studies have shown a combination of medication, such as methadone, and behavioral therapy is most effective in sustaining recovery from opioid use disorder.In 2021, an estimated 2.5 million people ages 18 or older in the U.S.

The medication is provided in conjunction with medical monitoring, laboratory testing, clinical assessment, counseling and support services, according to New Jersey’s standards for outpatient substance use disorder treatment facilities. A program like Sonara enables eligible patients to safely take the medication without having to travel to a clinic.

New Jersey Reentry Corporation provides services to assist people returning home from jail or prison. McGreevey said he’s heard first-hand from program participants about the difficulties of traveling to a clinic every day for medication assisted treatment. Sonara was developed to build trust between patients and clinicians, while also improving program retention rates and treatment outcomes, according to its website.
