Marion-Franklin wants to duplicate the success it enjoyed from 2004-15, when it won at least a share of the City-South championship each season.
Marion-Franklin went 7-4 in Lakso’s first season and 4-2 in 2020 before losing its first four games and enduring a losing record last fall. Most of the team’s top players from last season returned, including Ali and junior Tito Glass , along with a pair of quarterback options in seniors De’Aire Summerall and Noah McClendon.
Although the Red Devils opened by losing to Central Crossing 40-22 on Aug. 19, had their Week 2 game canceled because of the Columbus teachers strike and then fell to London 40-16 on Sept. 2, the slow start didn’t shake their confidence. “If you look around, we have the same dudes ,” Ali said. “Last year we took lifting real serious, real personal, and got better. The big thing I was hearing was, ‘You should have stayed at Walnut Ridge,’ but from the first day I came here last year, I knew what this team was capable of doing.”
Glass, who has rushed for 491 yards and 10 touchdowns and has two interceptions, is 6-foot-2, 230 pounds and has scholarship offers from Campbell, Kent State, Marshall and Toledo.Junior Terry Black , who was a key contributor last season for Hamilton Township, has four rushing and three receiving touchdowns.“I’d love to see our name on the wall so that people can see how much work we’ve put in,” Glass said. “The chemistry on this team is crazy.
